Kirkenes is a small town of about 3,500 people at the far northeastern tip of Norway, closer to the Russian and Finnish borders than to any major Norwegian city. It sits on the Barents Sea at the end (or beginning) of the Hurtigruten coastal voyage, the Norwegian postal route that has connected towns along the coast since 1893.
