Ocean Cay Cruise Port Guide

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is MSC Cruises' private Bahamian destination, located about 20 miles south of Bimini and 69 miles from Miami. Opened in December 2019 after a multi-year transformation, the 95-acre island is actually an artificial cay originally dredged in the 1960s for aragonite sand mining.

MSC acquired the island in 2015 and reshaped it into a private cruise destination with dual designations as a marine reserve. This is exclusively a port of call, used by MSC Cruises ships on Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries out of Miami and PortMiami.

Ships dock directly at a pier on the west side of the cay, so passengers walk off the ship rather than tendering. A pier extension is underway to accommodate a second ship simultaneously, scheduled for completion in late 2027.

Ocean Cay distinguishes itself from other Caribbean private islands with its marine reserve designation, including protected reef areas, conservation messaging, and educational activities. It also has one of the strongest evening schedules of any private island.

MSC ships often stay overnight, and Ocean Cay hosts evening entertainment including a nightly lighthouse show with music and lights projected on the 127-foot central lighthouse. About 1.5 miles of beachfront wraps around seven themed beach areas including a family beach, an adults-only zone, and dedicated areas for water sports.

Ocean Cay is designed for easy walking. Ships dock at the pier on the west side of the cay, and the main plaza plus beach areas are all within a 10 to 15 minute walk. A free tram loops between the main areas throughout the day (the seven themed beaches: Bimini Beach, South Beach, Lighthouse Beach, Ocean House Beach, Seacrest Beach, Family Reef Beach, and Robinson Beach), stopping at the central plaza, the lighthouse, and the beach bars.

Paved paths connect everything. The island is flat. Walking is simple. The beaches are all within about a mile's stretch of coastline. You cannot leave Ocean Cay to explore other parts of the Bahamas.

It's a closed MSC destination. Cellular service is spotty depending on your carrier's Bahamas plan. MSC ship Wi-Fi extends partially onto the island with a paid plan at the cay's main areas. The most important logistical consideration is the evening schedule when your ship stays overnight or late.

Most MSC Caribbean itineraries at Ocean Cay include evening entertainment with the lighthouse light show as the featured event, typically starting around 9pm.

Ocean Cay operates year-round as part of MSC's Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from Miami and PortMiami. The best months are November through April, when temperatures range 72 to 82°F (22 to 28°C) with low humidity and calm seas.

Water temperatures stay comfortable year-round. Summer (May through October) is hotter and more humid with daily highs 85 to 92°F (29 to 33°C). Afternoon showers are common but brief. Hurricane season runs June through November, with peak risk August through October.

Ocean Cay is in the Atlantic hurricane zone, and itinerary changes do happen during active storm periods, though MSC reroutes to Nassau or another Bahamian stop rather than canceling when storms are nearby.

Spring break weeks (March and April) bring the fullest ships. For the quietest experience, late January through early March or late April through early May hit the sweet spot. Note that "full capacity" at Ocean Cay (about 7,000 to 9,000 guests) is spread across 1.

5 miles of beach and seven themed zones, so crowding is manageable even on busy days.

The beaches are the main draw and each of the seven themed areas has a distinct character. Family Reef Beach has shallow snorkel-friendly water and children's activities. Lighthouse Beach is the main central beach near the 127-foot lighthouse.

Ocean House Beach has water sports (kayaks, paddleboards, sailboats) from the rental shed. Bimini Beach is the adults-only (18+) area with quieter vibes and a dedicated bar. South Beach and Robinson Beach are for the party crowd with music and volleyball.

Seacrest Beach is another quieter option. All beaches have free loungers and umbrellas. The central plaza has restaurants, shops, and a large bar area. MSC-included dining covers burgers, pizza, salads, and Caribbean-themed buffets at various points around the island.

Premium drinks and specialty dining are available with a Drink Package or à la carte. The lighthouse is the island's signature landmark and can be accessed with walk-up visits for photos. The marine reserve messaging is genuine: signage throughout the cay explains Bahamian conservation efforts, and some activities include educational elements (marine biology introductions, sustainability talks).

The evening light show at the lighthouse is a highlight for overnight visitors, with music synchronized to light projections on the lighthouse and surrounding structures. Watersports rentals (jet skis, paddleboards, kayaks) range from $40 to $200 depending on equipment.

Snorkel equipment rents for $25 to $40. Cabana rentals for families and groups run $200 to $500 for the day.

Ocean Cay is structured around MSC's property, so "excursion" here really means on-property paid upgrades. The Marine Reserve snorkel tours are the featured educational activity at $60 to $100, including guide-led snorkeling over protected reefs with marine biology commentary.

Jet ski tours run $100 to $200. Kayak tours run $40 to $80. Sailing catamaran tours around the cay run $80 to $150. Paddleboard rentals run $30 to $60 per hour. Cabana rentals (private shaded cabanas for 4 to 6 people with included drinks and fridge) run $200 to $500 depending on location.

The Aurea Spa on the island offers massage and treatments in beachfront cabanas at $120 to $300. For families, the Kid's Club provides supervised activities and a kids-only pool area. For the adults-only experience, Bimini Beach (18+) has its own bar and quieter atmosphere.

For the best value, the free beaches, included dining, and watersport rentals (if affordable for you) make for a great day without additional spending. If you want privacy or shade, cabanas are the clear upgrade.

Marine Reserve snorkel tours are the most educational option.

Ships dock directly at Ocean Cay's pier. No tendering (unlike Half Moon Cay through most of 2026). The currency is the US dollar and the Bahamian dollar, pegged 1:1. Most transactions are charged to your MSC account via your room key.

English and Italian are widely spoken (Italian because of MSC's Italian identity). Dress for the beach. Comfortable walking shoes for the pier walk and beach paths. The beach has limited shade outside of rented cabanas and umbrellas.

Bring a hat and sunscreen. Reef-safe sunscreen is encouraged given the marine reserve designation. Drinking water stations are scattered throughout and refillable bottles are encouraged. For evening events at the lighthouse, plan to be in the central plaza area 30 to 45 minutes before the show starts to get a good viewing spot.

The lighthouse show itself runs about 20 to 30 minutes. The biggest mistake first-time Ocean Cay passengers make is staying only on the first beach they see. The cay has seven distinct beaches with different atmospheres.

Walk or tram to explore 2 or 3 of them during your day. Family Reef Beach for families, Bimini Beach for adults-only quiet, Ocean House Beach for water sports, and Lighthouse Beach for the central action gives you the full spectrum.
